September 2024
Happy eclipse season! Eclipses are big and important topics but this month we will discuss a small but weighty topic, Pluto! Sometimes the biggest things come in the smallest packages. This is definitely the case for this month’s planetary protagonists. Pluto, the god of the underworld and riches empowers whatever it touches. Ancient astrologers didn’t use Pluto, it is not visible to the naked eye and wasn’t discovered until 1930. In 2006 it was relegated to a “dwarf planet”, an ironic move for an invisible planet who represents the titanic power lurking beneath the surface. Pluto is the slowest moving of all the outer planets and spends about 20 years in each sign of the zodiac.
This month through November is Pluto’s final move through the 29th degree of Capricorn. In late November it will leave Capricorn and ingress into Aquarius where it will spend the next 20 years. Simply put, now is a good time to reflect on where you have been since 2008. Think of this as the final opportunity to put a bow on the long and transformative stay Pluto has made in your chart.
The house that Capricorn occupies in your natal chart supplies the earthly topics of interest for this month’s horoscopes.
Aries — 10th House
The 10th house in the natal chart is the most visible house in the chart. Walk outside and point your finger straight up at the sky and that is the 10th house. So it is not hard to see how the significations of public reputation, career, and our visibility in the world were derived from this symbolic slice of celestial real estate. So with this information, please take the next few months to reflection on how your career and public reputation has changed over the last 15 years and how that has propelled you (or not) towards how you want to show up in the world.
Taurus — 9th House
Sometimes we get so close to finishing something but for whatever reason it just doesn’t happen. We always wonder what our life would have been like if we would have finished that last class and graduated college, taken that trip to India, or applied for that job we really wanted. Hindsight is 20/20 and most things ended up just the way they should. But with Pluto making one last stand in Capricorn, now is the time to finally finish that life goal you have been sitting on for the past 16 years. What are you waiting for?
Gemini — 8th House
For lack of better wording, the 8th house can be looked at as the house of our karmic contracts with other people. Most of us are holding onto something unresolved that is taking up space in our minds. A phone call we need to make, an apology, a loan to payback. Now’s your chance to make your move and free up some bandwidth. A bird can’t fly if it is locked up in a cage.
Cancer — 7th House
The 7th house is directly opposite the zodiac from the 1st house. The 1st house represents you and the 7th house represents the people you are in close relationships with. Humans are social creatures. How we learn to know ourselves is mostly in relation to other people around us. This only becomes a problem when the only way we know ourselves is by how we relate to others. For Cancers, it may be easier to know how to nurture someone else than it is to know how tonurture one’s self. Learning what you personally need and when you need it may be the work of a lifetime. If you haven’t already started in on that life’s work, now is definitely the time.
Leo — 6th House
Have you been on a 16 year mission? Think about it. Maybe it is something really big like a health journey or something really small like learning to knit in your spare time. If that thing you’ve been toiling away on for years still feels fresh, that great! But if it has stalled, now is the time to set it down and pick up a new project to work towards. Your New Year’s resolution this year might not be about what you need to stop doing but what you need to start doing.
Virgo — 5th House
The 5th house in ancient astrology is the house most closely associated with Venus and all that Venus signifies. Love, beauty, art, and pleasure to name a few. Is there something in that Venusian realm that you need to put a bow on? A creative project that needs one last push to finish? Or maybe that decades old worn-out sofa finally meets its resting place at the dump and makes room for that new sofa you’ve always wanted? I’m sure you will be compelled towards something and then you can reflect back on that Venusian transformation. Don’t think about it too hard.
Libra — 4th House
With the combination of Venus and Saturn ruling the sign of Libra it is not a far stretch to think of Libra as a kind of social stylist. You want balance and harmony in your environment and relationships in your life. Pluto’s final months in the 4th house of roots and family is sure to have you going back over a situation with your family or reinventing the roots that support you. Maybe this is the metaphorical period at the end of a very long sentence or the beginning of something new but either way, just remember a tree can only grow as strong as its roots.
Scorpio — 3rd House
So much of your immediate environment is determined by the culture that surrounds you. You know that one thing that’s been bugging you for years about the culture you grew up in or a particular person or mindset that fuels a daily distasteful experience? Well, now is your time to shed those tired old beliefs like a snake shedding its skin. It doesn’t really serve the culture and it definitely doesn’t serve you. A snake doesn’t miss its old skin and you won’t miss yours either.
Sagittarius — 2nd House
Many mystics over the years have said that this physical world we live in is an illusion. What’s the biggest illusion of all? Money! It hardly even exists anymore. It’s just numbers floating around the internet. But just because something is an illusion doesn’t mean it isn’t important. Here lies a great opportunity for a symbolic rebirth around all that resources you. Pluto moves from your 2nd house into your 3rd house this November and those hard labor pains can push you into a new way of moving about your life.
Capricorn — 1st House
The story of the Tortoise and the Hare is a great analogy for Capricorn energy meeting Pluto’s volcanic change. We all know who won that mythic race and the story is a great life lesson; one that Capricorn embodies whether they intend to or not. So ‘keep on keeping on’ but don’t forget to stop and smell the roses from time to time and acknowledge how your methodical ways have moved you over life's many metaphorical finish lines.
Aquarius — 12th House
Volcanoes work for millennia underneath the surface before their dramatic and explosive acts. It is an intense and fascinating phenomenon but all that fire and lava eventually becomes the beautiful earth we walk upon and call home. Life can be like this too sometimes. All the transformations and transitions you have gone through, while difficult at the times, eventually become the solid ground you can stand on and call home. Acknowledge where you stand now, in this very moment.
Pisces — 11th House
The illusion of luxury is easy to get lost in. Commercials bombard our every step with promises that happiness is just one more purchase away. Our ancient ancestral brains know that none of that is true but nonetheless, the masterful manipulative marketing of the modern age has us all running around like hamsters in a wheel. The brilliant humorist Mark Twain summed it up best when he said, “It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.” When Pluto moves from your 11th house into your 12 house later this year, be sure to keep Twain’s quote close at hand.
